General Manager/Advertising Director

The News-Messenger is searching for a motivated and top performing strategic leader to serve as General Manager and Advertising Director of the News-Messenger in Fremont, Ohio, as well as the News Herald in Port Clinton, Ohio, and Camden Publications located in Camden, Michigan.  This special opportunity is for the candidate who has a keen understanding of both print and digital advertising platforms.  The ideal candidate must have at least 3 to 5 years experience in higher-level advertising and leadership roles with a proven track record for results.  The GM/Ad Director must be able to create and lead sales strategy to uncover and develop market opportunities for revenue, through acquisition, retention and consultative selling concepts across multiple platforms. A strong understanding of audience-based selling is critical. Experience in developing and executing strategies across multiple platforms including the core newspaper, niche publications, digital web sites and mobile websites is vital. The ability to quickly assess situations, create innovative strategic plans, establish superior partnerships and relationships with peers, business leaders, and key regional and local clients are essential. Training, recruiting and development of an energetic, inspired, and committed world-class sales and marketing organization is a must.  The position reports to the President/Publisher of Media Network of Central Ohio.


The General Manager is responsible for revenue growth across all platforms and growing digital advertising expertise.

Develops, manages and achieves financial and strategic objectives; including accurate forecasts.

Directs all print, digital, and mobile advertising sales functions. Builds and leads a converged media sales organization.  Directs staff to sell total audience and inventory of print, digital and nondaily products.

Analyzes marketplace and competition to determine the most effective pricing and sales strategies for increasing advertising revenue across multiple platforms. 

Establishes goals for staff, prepares projections, approves sales goals for staff and approves sales packages.

Works with key advertisers, which includes local and locally controlled small businesses, to develop successful relationships; makes sales calls; and attends community and client events to further build customer partnerships and market growth.

Trains, motivates, recruits and develops energetic, creative and committed sales staff.

Maintains open communication with all employees to maximize morale and performance.

Job Requirements

A proven track record of successfully performing in a senior and/or advertising management positions a minimum of 3-5 years.

A history of successful leadership, innovation and goal achievement in a multimedia company. 

Bachelor’s degree

Possesses keen financial skills to prepare and implement unit operating budget, revenue and expense plans.

The ability to quickly develop and execute projects in addition to surpass financial projections.

Good interpersonal and leadership skills along with excellent verbal and written communication skills are mandatory.

Proficient PC skills including Microsoft applications Excel and Word.

Excellent organizational and analytical skills; strong ethical standards and integrity are a must.

Ability to demonstrate sound reasoning, judgment and decision making using good problem solving techniques.
